The Challenge of Synchronized Actuation

In complex municipal pump stations and diversion manholes, dual-stem gate configurations are a common necessity for managing large-scale water volumes. However, these systems present a unique maintenance challenge: ensuring both stems actuate in perfect synchronization. Without precision, mechanical binding occurs, leading to stripped threads, sheared pins, and catastrophic equipment failure.

The Power of the Invertible Housing

Standard industry gearboxes often require facility managers to stock specialized left-hand and right-hand threaded stems to ensure synchronized movement on dual-stem gates. This doubles inventory costs and complicates field repairs.

The PGW 102 features a unique invertible housing design. This allows one unit to be “flipped” or inverted during installation, maintaining identical thread directions across both stems. By utilizing a single thread direction, the 102 simplifies spare parts inventory and ensures that every turn of the handwheel results in perfectly balanced gate movement.

Wear Reduction: The 5-Inch Advantage

Maintenance frequency is directly tied to thread engagement. While the PGW 101 utilizes our standard-setting 4-3/4″ nut, the high-thrust demands of the PGW 102 required an upgrade.

Every PGW 102 utilizes a proprietary 5-inch extended drive nut. By increasing the thread engagement length by up to 67% over commodity competitors, we distribute the high-thrust loads (up to 12,000 lbs) over a much larger surface area. This significantly reduces frictional heat and mechanical wear, extending the service life of the internal bronze components and ensuring a 30-year operational intent.

Best Practices for PGW 102 Field Service

To maintain the 85% efficiency rating of your PGW 102, our engineering team recommends the following O&M schedule:

  1. Quarterly Lubrication: Utilize the integrated lube fittings to maintain the bevel gear set and the sealed pinion bearings.

  2. Stem Inspection: Check for debris in the threads; the 102’s high-torque 2:1 ratio can easily power through obstructions, but clean threads prevent long-term scoring of the 5-inch nut.

  3. Synchronization Check: Periodically verify that both units in a dual-stem setup are responding identically to input torque—the 102’s invertible design makes this adjustment simple.
